Changing Your Benefits

Open Enrollment

Open Enrollment begins on Oct. 16, 2023, and ends on Nov. 11, 2023. Any enrollments or changes made during Open Enrollment will become effective Jan. 1, 2024.

No action is required unless you want to change benefits or dependents or enroll in a Flexible Spending Account; however, we encourage all employees to review and revise benefits selections during the open enrollment period.

The IRS requires all flexible spending account participants to re-enroll in these plans every year. If you wish to continue these plan(s), be sure to make your elections by the deadline.

Review your benefits summary statement in SPS Workday for accuracy. It is your responsibility to correct any errors.

Qualifying Status Change

Generally, you can only change your health coverage during the Open Enrollment period each year. The coverage you elect during Open Enrollment will be effective January 1 through December 31. However, you may make certain changes to your coverage outside of the annual Open Enrollment period if you have a qualifying change in status. Examples include the following:

  • Birth or adoption/placement for adoption of a child;
  • Death of a dependent;
  • Marriage or divorce;
  • Change in SCHIP/Medicaid/Medical Assistance coverage;
  • Change/loss of other coverage, such as coverage under your spouse’s employment;
  • Change in Medicare eligibility

You have 60 days from the date of the qualifying change in status to submit the Benefit Event through the SPS Benefits System, upload the supporting documentation to change your coverage, and make your elections.
